SOUTHERN
CALIFORNIA DANCE COLLECTIVE
*** Creating Intentional Community Through Dance
***
The Southern
California Dance Collective is a group of people who love to dance. We
are especially interested in the place where dance and community meet.
One of our goals is to create more of these places in our lives. Our backgrounds
in dance are as varied as the forms of dance and movement we enjoy, but
we have a common love of the freeform improvisational dance that happens
in Southern California at places such as Dance Home in Santa Monica, Dance
Jam in San Diego and Dance Away in Santa Barbara. We appreciate the smoke
and alcohol-free, nonjudgmental atmosphere each of these places provides.
It is through these dances that many of us have met and come together
to create this cooperative.
We are looking
for fun-loving dance and community enthusiasts to join us in creating
future events and collaborations. We include and financially support our
pioneering dance teachers and facilitators who have created the dance
experiences and spaces that have nurtured our love of dance and community.
We have been
inspired by the very successful dance gatherings held by our sister groups
in Northern California and New England. Our aim is to create low cost,
not-for-profit, freestyle barefoot dances in the Southern California Area.
We are producing special dance events that everyone can afford and anyone
can attend, including dance weekends and an annual weeklong dance camp
in nature. While centered in dance, our events include all forms of creative
self-expression--these include music making, singing, playing, yoga, meditation
and experiences that build intimacy and foster community.
We invite all
people of good will, regardless of race, sex, gender, religion, age or
ability. We welcome children and people with special needs. If you share
our vision and you have skills, resources or passion to volunteer, or
if you would just like to participate in our events, we invite you to
join us.
